HDMI contains in addition to digital image also digital sound and just the digital transmission of

Photo and sound ensures that no loss of image quality caused by long cables and electrical noise.

TV equipment such as Blu-ray and DVD players, hard disk recorders and similar uses increasingly HDMI, but older equipment has not necessarily a digital output.
